You may think that all plastics are made the same, but this couldn’t be further from truth. There are many different types of plastic products available on store shelves today; from yogurt cups to liquid soap containers. Not all types of plastic can be recycled, but it is important to know that different types of plastics must be recycled differently and how to identify if they are recyclable or not. If you pick up a plastic product, somewhere on the bottom, or in an inconspicuous place, is a stamp that classifies what type of plastic the item is made of. This stamp looks like the recycle symbol with a number of 1 to 7 inside of it. This number is very important when sorting and where it should be recycled. While curbside pickup recycling does not require specific sorting of your plastics, check with them on which plastics they accept and which ones should be taken to a municipal recycling center for further sorting. There are some different places to recycle plastics depending on the classification it is. Knowing the classification numbers and how to dispose of each type will help you keep your recycling goals while cleaning out unwanted items.
